Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Determine job requirements
  2. Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  3. Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  4. Identify job requirements from specifications, job sheets or work instructions
  5. Establish servicing requirements and liaise with customer
  6. Prepare written and verbal quotations
  7. Confirm customer agreement on recommended service procedures to remedy faults
  8. Record and document repair process
  9. Open and close watch cases
  10. Select and use appropriate workshop tools and equipment
  11. Verify condition of case back/gaskets and replace, as required
  12. Clean case components, as required
  13. Remove and replace watch movements
  14. Identify and follow correct sequence for removal and replacement of watch movements
  15. Remove and replace, without damage, crown, stem and case fixings including case screws, movement rings and stem
  16. Determine condition of crown, stem, pendant and pushbuttons, and perform custom replacement, as required
  17. Remove and replace movements without damaging, marking or leaving fingerprints
  18. Verify correct replacement movement is selected
  19. Remove and replace hands and dials
  20. Remove and replace hands and dials without marking or damaging components
  21. Check and service hands and dials, as required
  22. Fit hands to synchronise with each other, dial batons and calendar
  23. Use correct workshop tools and equipment taking precautions for removal and replacement
  24. Check hands and dial clearances
  25. Conduct final inspections
  26. Check functionality of crown, stems and pushbuttons
  27. Confirm watch performance, hand alignment and calendar function and synchronisation
  28. Record and document repair

hand fitting tools

Appropriate working environment includes one (1) or more of the following:

suitable watchmaker's bench

clean and orderly work area (precautions taken to minimise dust)

adequate lighting

ergonomic chair with adjustable height

Case fixings include one (1) or more of the following:

case screws

movement rings

stem

Custom replacement includes one (1) or more of the following:

determining custom stem length

cutting and filing stem end and securing crown

replacing screw or friction fitted worn or damaged pendants

servicing, cleaning and replacing pushbutton

inspecting all crown, pendant, pushbutton gaskets for condition, and replacing and lubricating, as required

Check and service hands and dials include one (1) or more of the following:

luminance of hands

dial feet condition

rust and contamination

water marks

damage and wear to hands
